The island of Saint Lucia, located in the Lesser Antilles, is part of the "Windward Islands" arc. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Caribbean Sea to the west.

Saint Lucia's location benefits from a warm, humid climate that favors the development of sugarcane, which grows on fertile volcanic soil.

Rum is not part of the island's long tradition. In fact, sugar cane arrived late on Saint Lucia, during the 19th century.

Several distilleries were present on the island, but with the fall in sugar prices just after the Second World War, their numbers dropped considerably. The three main distilleries eventually merged in 1972 to create Saint Lucia Distillers, today the island's leading distillery.
