Mezan Jamaica 2011 46°: Description and customer reviews

Mezan Jamaica 2011 is a 10-year-old molasses rum, bottled according to Mezan's strict principles: no sugar, no coloring, no cold filtration. It's a single estate rum, since it's made from the estate's own molasses. Distilled in Forsyths pot-stills at Worthy Park, it was placed in bourbon barrels in 2011. Its first 3 years of aging took place on site, in Jamaica. The casks then traveled to Europe, where they matured for a further 7 years.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is superbly balanced, with all the generosity of Jamaican rums coming through, while remaining perfectly silky. The first, lightest notes are strangely reminiscent of sake, followed by ripe banana, bitter almond and sweet exotic fruit.

Aeration develops a slightly more full-bodied register, with copper notes that bring us closer to whisky. Dried banana dominates the proceedings, refreshed by a pretty pear eau-de-vie.

The palate is balanced and fruity, with just the right amount of body, always in the right tone. The Jamaican character is no less expressive, and that's the whole point of this rum. The fuller-bodied notes on the nose melt into almost creamy, oily, resinous pastry flavors.

The finish is ever more indulgent, emphasizing pits and pine resin. Dried banana carries a distinct cherry note, for a unique blend of aromas.

"Jamaican rums always seduce without forcing, especially when blended and reduced like this..."

100% Jamaican profile! After just the right amount of reduction, there's more than enough power to unveil the exotic aromas and notes we've come to expect from this type of rum. Fans of the genre will be delighted. No additions or coloring, which is really good. Highly recommended.
