Mezan Rum Jamaica Cask Strength 2006 is a molasses rum produced by Jamaica's famous Worthy Park distillery, located in the Lluidas Valley. Founded in 1670 by Francis Price, it is the country's oldest distillery still in operation.
This rum was distilled in 2006 from estate-grown sugarcane molasses. The molasses was slowly fermented with yeast strains also grown on site. It was double-distilled in Forsyth's copper pot still, a benchmark for hand-hammered stills.
The rum was then placed in ex-bourbon oak barrels for a total of 16 years. The first 3 years were spent in a tropical climate, and the following 13 in a continental climate.
A total of 142 casks were bottled without reduction from this number 1 cask, out of the 5 that the English independent bottler plans to release.
As with all the rums in the Mezan range, bottling was carried out without cold filtration, or the addition of coloring or sugar.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose offers us a green banana, still quite fresh, surrounded by splashes of apple, pear and pineapple. This banana is quickly joined by a good deal of cane sugar, which begins to caramelize and give it a pastry-like air.
With aeration, the banana, now cooked or even dried, coats itself with a small layer of wax. It then becomes very soft, tender, consistent and candied. Raw cane sugar, yeast and mild spices then complement it to form a steaming banana muffin.
The palate is simply fruity and pleasant, thanks in particular to a perfectly regulated alcohol level. Whereas banana reigned supreme on the nose, a flurry of exotic fruits now sweep across the taste buds. There's pineapple, mango and even a rather sweet jackfruit spiked with exotic pepper.
The finish is slightly pastry-like, with some raisins and a touch of stone.
