Papalin is a blend created in 2003 by Luca Gargano of the Velier house. It was only in 2021 that he decided to repeat the operation by creating a collection that consists solely of blends.
This new edition of the Papalin range consists of three Jamaican rums. These “high ester” rums are all distilled in Pot Stills and have benefited from entirely tropical aging. Each rum has aged for 5 years in the cellars of the distillery from which it comes.
The blend is made up of 63 barrels for this vintage, which was bottled after a reduction to 47°.
It consists of the following three rums:
- a rum from the Worthy Park distillery whose WPL marks display an ester content of between 60 and 120 g/hlap at the still outlet,
- a rum displaying the STCE marks from Long Pond with an ester content of between 550 and 700 g/hlap after distillation,
- un rhum de chez Hampden avec le marks C<>H et son taux d’esters compris entre 1300 et 1400 g/hlap lors de la distillation.
Yoann's tasting notes
Direction Jamaica for this nose . No way to be mistaken, we find all the typicality of this origin from the first seconds. Exotic notes intermingle with vanilla, cane sugar, fresh nuts, citrus fruits (lemon, lime) and peppermint. With a little aeration, the exotic fruits take the lead and assert themselves, followed by floral notes.
The palate is greedy and balanced with notes of vanilla and lemon zest. A refreshing side carried by aromatic herbs such as verbena and rosemary, makes its appearance. It is quickly swept away by a juicy pineapple, supported by citrus fruits including lemon which remains in place throughout the tasting. This lemon would almost transform into Lemon Curd with a pastry side.
The finish is long and persistent on exotic fruits, with pineapple and lemon in the lead.
