Presidente Marti 19 ans Solera is produced by the Oliver y Oliver distillery using the solera technique. This involves giving the youngest rums the benefit of the maturity of the oldest rums.
Aged in American and French oak barrels.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with notes of nuts (walnuts, almonds) coated in caramel. As the woody notes mingle with this roasted ensemble, they seem to bond more closely with the almond. This toasty, caramelized ambience nonetheless leaves room for an exotic edge. The result is a fruity rum as it might have been before cask ageing. Time has given a certain maturity to this juice, which takes the form of a sweet, vanilla-flavored orange liqueur.
As the rum airs out, the notes of time and cask come to the fore. The caramel is very dark, tinged with coffee and molasses. Caramelized nuts still dominate the profile, and the added brown sugar sometimes brings to mind an "English-style" rum. The fruits seem to have aged and we forget the young rum of the first moments. They are candied (plum, prune) and join the woodiness, passing through spices, especially cinnamon. This brings to mind a gingerbread, a sort of balance between mellowness and toastiness.
The attack on the palate is round and suave, tinged with a volute of blond tobacco smoke. The toasted wood has given its taste, leaving aside its astringency, which is no doubt explained by a certain sweetness embodied by caramel and vanilla. The wisp of smoke turns to coffee, evoking a dark coffee drizzled with a few drops of rum. We'd also have added a splash of milk or even cream to round out the sensation on the palate, as well as a pinch of ginger to spice things up.
The finish continues on this suave and even creamy side, between vanilla and coconut milk. The woodiness is still there, accompanied once again by its sweet counterpart.
