Worthy Park 109 Single Estate is a Jamaican single estate molasses rum. This means that every step in the rum-making process takes place on the estate, from cane planting to bottling. Worthy Park is best known for its sublime traditional pot-still, where all its rums are distilled.
This Worthy Park 109 is a dark rum (colored with caramel) with an alcohol content of 54.5%. This degree is called "gunpowder proof", i.e. the degree at which gunpowder ignites, even when soaked in rum. The 109 corresponds to the American measure of alcohol, which differs from the British one, but that's another story...
This cuvée is a blend of aged rums and white rums. In this case, we're talking about a 3-year-old WPL (light) rum, and an unaged WPE (heavy).
Nico's tasting notes
The nose fills us with happiness, when we find the beautiful dried banana typical of the distillery. Like an ultra-tropical whisky, this emblematic banana envelops the spirit, inviting us into a full-bodied indulgence that smells of gunpowder and exoticism.
With aeration, the fruit becomes finer, fresher, closer to pear or stewed peach. A touch of roasting has crept in. Aromas of coffee, caramel and roasted nuts emerge.
The palate doesn't disappoint, with a spicy entry and a texture that carries a lightly woody, almost mineral, charcoal grain. It's the charred oak barrel speaking at this point, encouraged by a dark, burnt caramel. At the heart of this caramel are roasted nuts, which themselves cover our copper-tinged dried banana.
The finish is long, lingering on exotic fruits.
