This Single Estate Reserve from Jamaica's Worthy Park distillery is a blend of rums distilled in copper pot stills and aged in old bourbon barrels for 6 to 10 years.
Nico's tasting notes
In brief: fruit - pastry - medicinal - wood - round - sweet spices - cereals
The nose of Worthy Park rums is instantly recognizable, and this one is no exception. Banana, a greedy brioche flavour, more or less resin and stone. At first, it's the dried banana that takes the cake, a banana so ripe it's turned black. There's also a hint of vanilla tobacco and yeast, as in a good cake batter, with a good pinch of grated tonka bean.
With aeration, the rum takes us into something a little deeper. It's in the heart of a pine forest that we find our dried banana. The balance between medicinal and pastry is admirably delicious. The woodiness is chocolatey, and ripe exotic fruits mingle with malty cereals.
The palate is quite dry, which contrasts with the nose, reminding us that a sweet rum is not necessarily a sweet rum. This rum retains its character and the energy needed to release its aromas generously. After this rather spicy, woody attack, the banana is tastier than ever. It's surrounded by spices and brioche yeast, to finally give the impression of sticking together like a thick resin.
On the finish, pine resin lingers, with a slight coppery edge and raisins.
"All the greediness of Worthy Park is here, made more than accessible by a reasonable degree..."
