In the 18th century, ships left for the New World carrying barrels of sweet wine. Instead of being returned empty, they were filled with Mexican rum, also known as Chiguirito. This allowed the rum to take full advantage of the time needed for the journey, soaking up the aromas of the barrels.
Later, King Felipe V of Bourbon decided to ban rum because it led to a substantial drop in the sale of Spanish spirits.
