El Ron Prohibido is an old rum produced in the distillery of the same name, located in central Mexico, more precisely in the town of Pénjamo.
This traditional 12-year-old rum is distilled in columns and then aged in oak casks using the solera system, a method also used for aging sherry wines. The resulting blend combines the power of youth with the complexity of the oldest rums.
El Ron Prohibido comes in a bottle with a complex relief. The bottle features a small handle that acts as a single ear.
Nico's tasting notes
We're greeted by a light rum nose, moving towards caramelized notes. The woodiness is toasty, with a good handful of caramelized nuts (hazelnut, walnut, almond). A few spices spice things up a bit, with cloves standing out. The caramel gradually becomes drier and the wood charred, leading to notes of coffee and cocoa.
This trend is confirmed when the liquid is aerated, with the dryness of the burnt caramel still developing its coffee and cocoa notes. A hint of mango makes its way through before being buried under the caramel.
On the palate, we get a good dose of roasted nuts, as if ground to a powder and infused with rum. Then the impression is rather balanced, albeit paradoxical: at once sweet and alcoholic, soft and astringent, dry and watery.
Coffee, cocoa and dark chocolate round off the tasting experience.
