The origins of Germana cachaça lie with the Caetano family, from Vista Alegre in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Initially, it was a very small production distilled in the farm's small still. One day, Mr. Caetano decided to offer his production to the workers of the nearby gold mines, who adopted it and popularized it throughout the state.

Germana is a popular mystical figure that evokes purity andauthenticity. That's why no phytosanitary products are used on the cane. The cane is cut by hand and transported by donkey. For fermentation, corn and natural yeasts are used, then the cachaça is distilled in a small copper still, before resting for a few months in a balsam wood vat. For the record, the original bottle is wrapped in banana straw, which was used to protect the bottles in the sack carried on the donkey's back.

Germana cachaça comes in several versions: unaged, aged 5 or 10 years, or aged 2 years in umburana casks, a species of Brazilian cherry tree. It is, of course, ideal for making an excellent caipirinha. Read less
