While London dry gins tend to be known for their specific style, there's another British peculiarity. Plymouth Gin is the only geographical appellation in existence.
Of course, it has to be distilled in Plymouth. Today, only the Black Friars distillery is authorized to use this appellation.

This is England's oldest working distillery. The buildings are those of a former monastery, and traces of distillation date back to 1697.

However, it wasn't until 1793 that the production of Plymouth Gin began to be marketed.
At this time, Mr. Coates joined Fow & Williamson, and soon afterwards the company became known as Coates & Co.

Since 2004, however, it has been known as the Black Friars distillery or the Plymouth Gin distillery.

Three expressions are currently available: Plymouth Gin Original, Plymouth Navy Strength and Plymouth Sloe Gin. Read less
