Laura’s Rum World Tour – 2nd stop: El Dorado Distillery, Guyana

Passionate about rum, travel and encounters, Laura (Lolo for short) is traveling around the world in 9 months: 15 countries and the goal of visiting more than 50 distilleries. So obviously, we like it a lot!

We regularly publish articles written by Laura for Rhum Attitude. Here is the second one.

You can also find it in English at http://www.rumtheworld.com/

El Dorado, the distillery of Guyana

Direction Guyana , this country between Venezuela and Surinam, where the local atmosphere is relaxed, where life is a mixture of cultures between Latin America, the Indians, the populations coming from the Caribbean… where nature is wild (Kaiser Falls, dense jungle…) and where El Dorado rum – molasses rum – flows freely for nothing in the bars of Georgetown!

I can tell you right away that it was a real favorite and a great discovery!
Its particularity comes from the fact that the range from 3-year-old white rum to 25-year-old rum is not only differentiated by its age but also by a particularity: each rum comes from a blend of rums coming either from distillation columns or from pot stills (pot stills) of different types. The distillery has no less than 6 different continuous distillation columns, including the last wooden coffey still, and 2 pot stills.

The first range brings together the 4 “specialty rums”

  • El Dorado 3 years (white) comes from the “Savalle still”, we find aromas of coconut, wood and hazelnuts… Top in Daïquiri!
  • El Dorado 5 years since I last tasted it…
  • El Dorado 8 years: blend of Coffey and Savalle Stills with a hint of Pot Still. Notes of caramel and oak barrels
  • Spiced rum whose main spice is cinnamon

The second range “Special reserve” includes 4 older rums ranging from 12 to 25 years old

  • El Dorado 12 years (my favorite for rum & coke) is a blend of wooden and metal coffey stills. Its notes of caramel cream go perfectly with coke for an aperitif: at €1.50 a glass, we can afford it…
  • El Dorado 15 years : the first rum produced by El Dorado, it comes from the single and double wooden potstill – We find more particularly the notes of tobacco and leather. The rum to taste to discover the soul of El Dorado!
  • El Dorado 21 years old : blend of metal Coffey still and wooden pot still simple. Much more complex and soft at the same time, it has an initial nose of banana, molasses and then evolves towards older aromas of leather and spices…
  • El Dorado 25 years old – unfortunately not tested.

I thank Darryl for his great visit and the welcome that the whole team gave me!

Next stop Sainte Lucie with the Sainte Lucie distillery which produces among others, the Chairman, the 1931, Admiral Rodney and many others…
