Boukman is a traditional Haitian rum, also known as "clairin trempé". There's no sugar here, as in most spiced rums, just local spices and wild plants.
Nico's tasting notes
The first nose is curious because it's different from the spiced rums we usually encounter. The spices are indeed present, but they seem natural, vegetal, as if derived from fermentation. The aromas are delicate, the herbs soft and non-medicinal. It's halfway between cachaça and gin, with slightly bitter berries and botanicals. The sweetness then gives way to more aromatics, but the rum also becomes thicker, with a rather velvety vegetal quality.
Aeration further softens the profile. It's delicate, natural and unostentatious, with a soft vegetal base. Cachaça remains in mind, with a tender, slightly spicy cane, as well as aromatic and exotic wood essences. The sweetness of toasted cornbread is surprisingly pleasant. The idea of a fine, delicate gingerbread is also gaining ground.
The palate is very smooth and vegetal, quite straightforward. Then we start to see the cane in detail: citrus and white pepper, a little less spice, an artisanal white rum with moderate fermentation. The palate is relatively simple, delicate and sympathetic, with just a hint of golden spice and vegetal notes.
The finish is tinged with a little vegetal bitterness, then licorice and sweet, mellow cane that moves towards steamed artichoke and green curry.
"A unique spiced rum, with delicate pure cane juice scented with botanicals. One could imagine a cool cocktail with tonic..."
