La Mauny 1749 Héritage is an amber rum aged for 18 months in oak casks at the Martinique distillery. The originality of this amber rum lies in its final aging for several months in oak casks that had previously contained Ruby Port wine (smaller in capacity than the casks, allowing for an intense exchange with the wood and the outside environment).
Nico's tasting notes
The nose of this rum is very vegetal and will need some time to open up and relax. The cane comes to the fore, sprinkled with white pepper. The rum gains in depth, and the balance between dry and round is established. The woodiness brings structure and frames a certain madness: we don't dare believe it, but it's an Asian side that emerges, between soy and nuoc mâm sauces.
After a veil of cocoa, there's a touch of prune and red fruit. We're never far from the chilled white rum base, but we're also delighted by the ripeness of dried fruit, apricot and peach.
These dried fruits and prunes are restored on the palate, held together by a woodiness that brings bitterness to the balance. Roasted fruit (peach and apricot) and banana provide a pleasant thickness.
The finish is on a more traditional, dry, peppery cane, with the prune persisting over the length.
"A good example of an amber tasting rum..."
