La Mauny 1749 Héritage is an amber rum aged for 18 months in oak casks in the cellars of the Martinique distillery. The originality of this amber rum lies in its final ageing for several months in oak casks that had previously contained Ruby Port wine (of smaller capacity than the casks, allowing for an intense exchange with the wood and the outside environment).
Nico's tasting note
The nose of this rum is very vegetal and will need some time to open up and relax. The cane then shows its nose, sprinkled with white pepper. The rum gains in depth, the balance between dry and round is established. The woodiness brings structure and frames a certain craziness: we don't dare to believe it, but it is indeed an Asian side that emerges, between the soy and nuoc mâm sauces.
After the passage of a veil of cocoa, we have a little prune and red fruit. We are never far from the fresh white rum base but we also enjoy a little ripeness made of dried fruits, apricot and peach.
These dried fruits and prunes are restored on the palate, held together by a woodiness that brings bitterness into the balance. The roasted fruits (peach and apricot) as well as the banana ensure a very pleasant thickness.
The finish is on a more traditional and dry peppery cane, the prune persists on the length.
"A good example of an amber tasting rum..."
