Old Brothers x Bear's House Grogue Tarrafal 44,6° : Description and customer reviews

Old Brothers x Bear's House Grogue Tarrafal is a collaboration between the famous French independent bottler, and a beer and cocktail bar in Toulouse. Together, they have bottled this grogue, a rum made from pure Cape Verdean cane juice. To be more precise, it comes from the Tarrafal region, a small, very arid area in the west of the island of Santo Antão.

The pure juice is naturally fermented for 7 to 14 days, depending on weather conditions. Distillation is then carried out by hand, in a single pass, using a copper still with a wooden head. There's no need for reduction here, so toddy is bottled "brut d'alambic".

Nico's tasting notes

The nose takes off in all directions, but remains very green and natural in its vegetal, herbaceous register. There's cane, of course, very ripe and wild, but also sweet herbs like sage, as well as very ripe fruit, including tomato.

With aeration, the aromatic profile gets even crazier, and is reinforced by a good whiff of menthol. The tomato is more than ripe, it's now cooked and sweet, so much so that it's turned into a ketchup sauce.

The palate is bursting with cane aromas, with a wiser, fresher side than on the nose. It's more reminiscent of an agricultural rum from the French West Indies, garnished with citrus zest and sweet pepper. Very ripe fruit and tomato follow, in the form of a velvety green juice.

The finish is 100% cane, with a rich, sweet pepper-infused vesou.

"A beautiful expression of cane, with a unique, playful profile..."
