Plantation Original Dark Trinidad from the Ferrand cognac house comes to us from Trinidad and Tobago. Like the rest of Ferrand's range of rums, it is flattering and very pleasant on the palate.
With Plantation Original Dark, Ferrand offers us a rum made from a blend of several elegant Trinidad and Tobago vintages, all aged for 2 to 6 years in old bourbon casks. Unlike Ferrand's other rums, Original Dark Trinidad is not aged in cognac casks.
This fine, smooth rum can be enjoyed on its own, but also makes an excellent base for classic amber rum cocktails.
And for cigar lovers, the marriage between the two is perfect.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, the Jamaican influence of the blend is evident. Secondary aromas from fermentation take over, in the form of extremely ripe tropical fruit. The rum is sewn with caramel and honey, but also toasted bread or brioche and marzipan. Pineapple is accompanied by a small salty olive, each giving body to the other. We also have a few spices to spice things up, a wet bark, and above all a variety of ripe exotic fruits.
Aeration will add creamy red fruit and honeyed woodiness, but it's all there: the rum's fruity character evokes the warmth and humidity of the tropics.
The attack on the palate is soft and consistent, like an exotic fruit paste. Dark chocolate and candied orange zest are reminiscent of orangettes. In the mid-palate, the rum warms up and spreads its honeyed flavors, the tropical side being more measured than on the nose.
The finish is quite sweet, with caramelized pecans and a lingering zaniness.
