Springbank: the family soul of Campbeltown

Springbank was founded by a bootlegger, William Reid, who obtained a distilling license. He then sold the business to his in-laws, William and John Mitchell, in 1837.

The distillery is located in Campbeltown, which is not a vast region like the Highlands, Speyside or Lowlands, but simply a port town. Springbank is therefore a small town.

By the end of the 19th century, there were some 30 smoking distilleries in the area. In the 1920s, the downturn in the whisky market hit Campbeltown hard. Springbank was one of the few survivors, despite being silenced from 1926 to 1933.

Its history continued smoothly until a hiatus from 1979 to 1987. It was then that the decision was taken to stop selling to blenders and concentrate on single malts. The reopening of the malting floors in 1992 confirms this return to the roots and the desire to re-establish an authentic style.

Springbank is now Campbeltown's flagship distillery, maintaining the "old-school" spirit of Scotch whisky, a blend of tradition and human dimension.

Springbank: an official triple range

Unlike many distilleries, Springbank, which produces less than 1 million liters a year, keeps most of its whisky. Only a few casks are purchased by independent bottlers.

Over the years, Springbank has developed three clearly identifiable types of whisky.

First distilled in 1997 and launched in 2005, Hazelburn is a triple-distilled, unmatured whisky. It includes the classic Hazelburn 10 Year Old and limited editions such as Hazelburn Oloroso Cask.

The aptly named Springbank, produced since 1828, uses partial triple distillation (2.5 times), and is lightly peated. The traditional range comprises Springbank 10 yo, Springbank 12 yo brut de fût, Springbank 15 yo, Springbank 18 yo and Springbank 21 yo.

Finally, Longrow, first distilled in 1973, is an experiment to create a whisky with Islay characteristics. Today, this highly peated version can be found in the form of Longrow Peated and Longrow 18-Year-Old, as well as Longrow Red. The latter are limited editions aged in bourbon casks and finished in various exotic casks (red wine, port, etc.).

Springbank also makes a blend, Campbeltown Loch. Read less
