Rum is a complex spirit that can contain hundreds of different aromas. The key is to give these aromas the means to express themselves. To make sure you don't miss out on all the qualities of the little pleasure you've just treated yourself to, the choice of glass is very important.

Why glass is important

As a cocktail or with soda, rum can be drunk in a tumbler (a large, flat-bottomed glass), a wine glass, a cup, a shot, etc. But for tasting, a tulip-shaped glass is de rigueur. But when it comes to tasting, a tulip-shaped glass is de rigueur. Thanks to its flared base and reduced neck, this shape allows you to better appreciate the aromas of your rum.

The few centilitres at the bottom of the glass (no need to serve lumberjack doses to appreciate) need space and air for the aromas to blossom. These aromas will naturally rise to the surface of the glass. They will concentrate right under your nose, thanks to the reduced neck.

No need to warm the rum in the palm of your hands. Its aromas are best expressed at room temperature. Stemmed glasses are preferable, as they allow you to better observe the sometimes fascinating color of your precious nectar.

The tasting

After serving your rum, lift your nose above the glass to catch the first light notes that come with the alcohol. Avoid swirling your rum around like a wine. Unlike wine, it doesn't need oxygenation, and in fact this can be very disruptive. On the other hand, you can tilt your glass horizontally (which is why it's a good idea to serve small doses) and run the rum over the sides. The fine film that forms around the rim of the glass will release its delicious aromas.

With your glass tilted at or near horizontal, you can try placing your nose in different places. The rum then breaks down into layers. The heavier aromas escape at the bottom, and the more volatile ones at the top.

When it's time to taste your rum, just take a few drops to familiarize your palate with it. You'll appreciate your first sip even more. It won't burn, and your taste buds won't be overpowered by the strength of the beverage.

The different lenses available

We've chosen to offer you two glasses that we think are perfect for tasting a good rum.

Nosing glass

This classic is used in competitions and professional tastings. It's also the one we use at our tasting parties. Its proportions are just right, and its small size makes it easy to handle.

It is available in a neutral, perfectly transparent version, or in a screen-printed Rhum Attitude version, individually or in packs of 6.

L'Ambient de Chef & Sommelier

A slightly more chic tulip-shaped glass made from Kwarx, a fine, resistant material with the transparency of crystal. With its long stem and pleasing lines, it's a great gift idea. It'll look great at the table or in your best armchair, and will make you appreciate your favorite rum all the more. What's more, the finesse of its buvant (the rim of the glass that you bring to your mouth) is an undeniable plus when it comes to appreciating the texture of your rum. Read less
