Barbancourt Réserve Spéciale 5 étoiles 8 ans 43° : Description and customer reviews

Through the very old Barbancourt Réserve Spéciale 5 étoiles pure cane juice rum, Haiti expresses the richness of its terroir.
Aged for 8 years in Limousin oak barrels, the cuvée has developed a remarkable aromatic bouquet. It has also acquired a fine balance that makes it a recognized tasting rum.

Three medals at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London crown Barbancourt Réserve Spéciale.

Laurent's tasting notes

Its color is golden with discreet green highlights.

The nose is lively and dry. The alcohol is present but not overly pronounced. Vanilla and nuts (almonds and walnuts).

The palate is supple and even slightly mellow. Caramel dominates. The balance between alcohol and relative sweetness is interesting.

The finish is drier, once again offering caramel and a hint of citrus (orange).

  6. mc lagrange

Barbancourt rum is very different from other rums, but the 8-year-old is not the best.

On the nose 👃🏻: lively and dry at first, with a strong medicinal, alcoholic bent. Then the acidity of apple and pear is confirmed as the glass is aired. There's also a note of beeswax, and even honey, pepper and vanilla. It gains a little roundness and mellows out after a while, especially when the level in the bottle drops. Be patient before attacking it.

On the palate 👅 it's unctuous, well-flavored and tangy. The cane pepper is clearly present, with a pleasant, surprisingly young woodiness for its age, very lightly roasted. The fruit notes are pear and white grape, with a wineiness that reflects the aging in ex-Cognac casks. Some citrus fruit too. Vanilla is more appreciated on more generous sips; it's relatively intense and greedy.

The finish is rather fresh and moderately long on that vanilla pear note, with a little pepper. It goes down really well as a digestive, which is where I prefer it 👌

Verdict ⚡️: this is a confusing rum on first tastings when you're used to agricoles from the French overseas departments. I'd even go so far as to say that it's a bit of a head-scratcher, with the alcohol very much in evidence, especially when the bottle is new. You have to let it open up for a long time in the glass to really appreciate it and regain some roundness 👍. Count on 30 minutes for a new bottle, a little less afterwards. It actually smells really good in the empty glass after a few minutes 🙂

I completely agree with the previous review. Once you've tasted it, it becomes the benchmark. There are more amazing ones, but this is still "my" rum. Extra soul?

  16. Momo

The value for money of this rum is second to none. You'd almost think they'd made a mistake ^^.

  • Head for Martinique with a sweet rum and notes of dried fruit.
  • The 15-year-old version, for even greater complexity.
