This Benromach 2012 Virgin Oak Air Dried is a single malt scotch whisky from the Contrasts collection. The aim of the Contrasts collection is to show the influence on a whisky's taste profile of the way the oak is dried before being transformed into casks by a cooperage. Benromach has therefore created a tandem of bottlings to understand the influence of this process.
Here we're talking about the Air-dried Oak version, distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2023: aged for 10 years in a batch of oak casks that had previously been air-dried for 36 months.
This method corresponds to the industry standard.
You can compare this version with the Benromach 2012 Virgin Oak Kiln Dried bottling from the same Contrasts range. In this other version, the oak has only been dried for 24 months before being toasted for a short period in a traditional kiln found in Scottish distilleries.
