Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum is a molasses rum with a very dark color due to the oak casks used for aging, which were burned twice. Natural spices and herbs have been macerated to produce this black spiced rum.
Nico's tasting notes
Summary: spicy - sweet - roasted and caramelized nuts - very round - candied red fruits
The nose is obviously very spicy, but in a rather gentle way, so it's the toasty, burnt side that gives intensity. This drier character brings clove to the fore, as well as Zan-style licorice. That said, sweetness remains the prevailing sensation, taking the form of candied red fruits. The sugar syrup is scented with sweet spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. The red fruits are sweet, even reminiscent of strawberry bubble-gum. Caramel finally reconciles the two worlds.
Time and aeration confirm the rum's sweet character and confectionery spirit. Notes of milk chocolate and candied fruit add to the sweetness. Everything seems rounder, more candied. The spices are also softer, vanilla asserts itself and joins caramel. Strawberry is joined by banana and orange liqueur to give the impression of syrup.
The entry into the mouth is smooth and the flavor is very spicy. It's neither pungent nor burning, but rather the flavor of the spice bouquet swells in the mouth. Burnt wood, molasses and especially coffee evoke a spiced coffee. Roasted and then crushed nuts reinforce the powdery grain, just like spicy coffee grounds. The pecans are toasted and caramelized, like a cake with slightly burnt edges.
The finish is on sweet coffee, with a little stick of red fruit paste on the side.
