The US Virgin Islands are located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. This group of islands enjoys a warm and humid climate, perfect for the development of sugar cane. Moreover, the land is mainly of volcanic origin: the soil is therefore fertile and favours the cultivation of sugar cane.

Today the Virgin Islands are split in two: one part belongs to the United States and the other to Great Britain. The styles of rum production are completely opposite within the archipelago.

In one of the most modern distilleries on the American side, "Nelthtropp's" in Saint Croix, light rums are produced. The distillation takes place in a column still (5 columns to be precise). This method of production produces fine rums. On the British side, the rum is an agricultural rum, made in a more traditional way in an old iron still.

The main rums from the US Virgin Islands are Cruzan (produced since 1760), Sailor Jerry and finally Red Rum. There are also lesser known rums such as A.H. Riise. Read less
