Centenario 18 is a blend of different rums at least 18 years old, aged in oak barrels in the tropical latitude of Costa Rica.
Nico's tasting notes
The initial nose is rather typical of Latin American rones, with a light body and roasted character. Notes of toasted wood and roasted nuts are gentle and measured, however, and vanilla coats everything nicely. The rum's light side is expressed by tart, flowery notes of sugar syrup.
The aeration blows over a handful of dark chocolate powder. It flies off, tickling the nostrils and establishing a lasting toasty sensation of nuts, coffee and molasses. Cinnamon, as if scraped from vanilla-coated wood, balances the full roundness of tobacco and blond caramel that follows.
The palate is smooth and sweet. The thick caramel is well-cooked and has stuck to the bottom of the pan. The alcohol deposits on the palate all the roasted notes we had noticed on the nose: black coffee, bitter cocoa, roasted nuts, molasses. Spices bring a certain variety to the aromas, before leading to vanilla tobacco and sweet caramel.
The finish is light, but the roasted aromas persist for a while.
