Depaz Grande Réserve XO 45°: Description and customer reviews

Depaz Grande Réserve XO is an exceptional cuvée made from a blend of several vintages of very old agricultural rums aged between eight and ten years. In addition to the selection of cane used to make it, Grande Réserve also draws its unique character from the volcanic soil at the foot of the Pelée volcano and the spring waters around the distillery.

Laurent's tasting notes

Its color is a warm gold.

On the nose, there's no doubt that this is a beautifully crafted agricole. The balance between cane and wood is remarkable. The impression is greedy and dry at the same time, and not without a certain freshness. Aromas of vanilla, brown sugar, sweet spices and licorice combine with the cane and barrel to make this a great nose!

In the mouth also the balance is between the vesou and the woody. These are also the two main aromas of this rum, with the sweet spices. Its 45° also gives it a welcome pep.

The finish is very long on spices and wood. Brown sugar returns after a while, accompanied by very light medicinal touches.

"A rum characteristic of agricultural rums. This is the rum that introduced me to this category."

On the nose 👃🏻: the greediness already palpable on the Depaz Cuvée Victor Depaz. I'm getting a nice cocoa note with the fruit, something a little fresh like bananas and apples at first, then more prunes with aeration. The pepper takes up a lot of space in the glass, as does a little clove. The old oak is well integrated. As the minutes go by, I find it sweeter and sweeter, with a hint of coffee.

On the palate 👅: the attack lets us enjoy this deep, juicy old oak for a long time, spreading deliciously throughout the mouth. It's nicely sweet but quite dry and with lots of character, depth. Then there's that lovely note of cocoa and sweet spices, especially clove, with a hint of roast that gets the taste buds going again. The fruitiness is not to be outdone, but more timid at this stage.

The finish is long without being exceptional either. We have a furtive vanilla passage before switching back to our caramelized oak wood which turns out to be more spicy and fruity this time, still very elegant and sweet over time 👌

Verdict ⚡️: this is unquestionably a delicious rum that has succeeded in extracting all that is most interesting from the old oak barrels. The woodiness is magnified, very marked and gourmand at the same time 🤤 It's also a rum that manages to retain a lovely sweetness throughout the tasting, which makes it particularly enjoyable 🙂

    Superb rum

Quite simply one of the best Martinique rums I've ever tasted.
The balance between barrel and raw material is exceptional. It remains dry, however, like the white rum that is aged for 12 years to achieve this result. I warmly recommend it!

A must among Martinique rums. For me, it's a benchmark in the field. To find better than this Depaz is almost utopian.
