As its transparent color does not indicate, Diplomatico Planas is a rum aged for 6 years in small American white oak barrels having previously housed bourbon and “malt whisky”.
Stronger in alcohol content (47° compared to 40° previously) it replaces Diplomatico Blanco in the Destilerias Unidas range which includes no less than 49 different rums.
Like "Blanco", it is a blend of light rums (column distillation) and heavy rums (still distillation). Filtration on charcoal lees restores its original whiteness, making it a sophisticated, aromatic base for cocktails.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is immediately striking in its contrast with the visual. You realize that this is indeed a rum that has been aged and then "blanched". Indeed, the brand's typical caramel aromas, as well as nuts and molasses, emerge from the glass with good intensity. No doubt about it, this nose is that of an aged rum. The wood is toasted, to say the least. The barrel has undoubtedly been heavily burned, giving the rum the minerality of charcoal. Caramel coats all this, ensuring that the rum retains all its seductiveness.
Aeration prolongs this seductive venture, with vanilla and a rather sweet leaning. The result is a more traditional white molasses rum. Later, the toasty wood releases even more vanilla.
The entry into the mouth is not as easy as the nose. It's smoky, toasty and woody. The rum wants to assert itself, and its 47% helps it to do so. Of course, you can't miss the roundness of a vanilla candy, but you realize that Diplomatico wanted to present a rum with character. This is expressed by a finish that draws on smoky, salty meat.
As for the finish, it's all about charm, as the rum gives up the ghost and surrenders to the roundness of soft vanilla caramel.
