El Dorado 8 years 40: Description and customer reviews

An aged rum produced on the banks of the Demerara River by British Guiana's last distillery, El Dorado 8 ans is a blend of several rums distilled in the traditional stills, including one made of wood, used at the distillery. The rum was then aged in oak casks previously used for aging bourbon.

El Dorado 8 ans is the meeting of the heavy rum characteristic of distilleries with English traditions and lighter rums, offering a pleasant tasting experience, dry or in cocktails.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose of this rum is truly "Demerara", with molasses, a toasty woodiness, a roasted and dry side. Walnuts and chestnuts are roasted and coated with molasses. Coffee and cocoa are dark. Hazelnuts are present, but have not been stripped of their fine envelope. This dryness is balanced by stewed banana flesh and dried fruit (grapes, figs and even dates).
Caramel arrives with time, before the rum's aromas become a little muddled. Aeration doesn't really change the profile, except that it's a little less roasted and greedy. It becomes more modest.

Caramelized woodiness marks the palate's entry, smoky and burnt. Notes of roast and molasses come to the fore. Once we've had this rum in our mouths, we detect more ripe fruit on the nose, notably a plump cherry.

The finish is fairly smooth. Molasses and caramel are still present.

"A rum that offers a profile typical of Demerara rums, we'll go further down the range for more complexity..."

We're beginning to smell of Guyana.

    Amber color.

On the nose, the power of Demerara rums is present without being exuberant. A woody scent with roasted notes (more cocoa than coffee) and caramelized banana. Very pretty nose. Classic Demerara.

On the palate, as with the 3-year-old, the cane sugar is very present. A little disappointing, as the palate is less powerful than the nose might suggest. However, the woodiness of this rum makes it a little dry, and this balances the overall bouquet quite well. Roasted aromas are present on the palate (coffee). There's a lovely bouquet in this rum.
In the background, there's a fruity touch (orange liqueur).

The finish is short, with roasted aromas.

I have mixed feelings about this rum. It's well-balanced, complex and quite tasty. However, it lacks a little power and length.

3.5/5 if you take it without knowing the price / 4-4.25/5 for its value for money

I think this is the perfect rum to start taming Demerara. Indeed, we find the classic Demerara markers without its titanic power on the palate. Excellent value for money. I'd recommend it to beginners who want to try out rums from English Guiana.
