HSE VSOP Port Cask Finish 45°: Description and customer reviews

HSE VSOP Port Cask Finish is a very old agricultural rum produced at the Simon distillery in Martinique. It is the latest addition to the "Finitions du Monde" range of Habitation Saint Étienne rums.

Distilled in a Creole column, it is first aged for over 3 years in American oak casks. It is then transferred for over 8 months to 225-liter casks that had previously contained Port.

The deliciousness of Port wines harmonizes with the characteristic flavors of this old Martinique rum.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is amply fruity and candied, like a generous, elegant grenadine studded with sweet spices. Ripe, weathered cane remains the queen of the show, surrounded by precious woodiness and a hint of freshly minted concentration.

With aeration, the wine takes on a drier, woodier, kernel-colored side, with an oxidation typical of Port wines. The prunes and nuts gradually melt into a rich syrup, as do the tannins, which stretch out but remain very present.

On the palate, we return to a profile more typical of AOC Martinique, with a cane that has mellowed in contact with wood, retaining tannins that it has undertaken to melt in its turn. This dialogue between plant and oak gives rise to flavors of dried fruit, well rounded by a fat, greedy touch.

The finish is more tannic, drying and sweet too. There are a few pits, prune flesh and sparkling spices.

"A very pretty conversation between the cane and the various casks that have housed this rum..."
