Rivière du mât Opus 5 is a blend of very old agricultural rums aged a minimum of 6 years. The average age of the 5 rums making up this cuvée is 8 years.
It is one of Réunion's great rums, all the more so as aged agricultural rums are rare here.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, barrel notes are covered with red and black fruit tannins. This catchiness lends a vinous aspect, in the manner of a port or dry sherry, for example. Once rinsed away with a little aeration, these tannins give way to others that are much more mellow, giving the wine more of an agricultural identity. A certain woody concentration returns with aeration, with a beautiful bouquet of spices and a patina on the solvent. Dried fruits draw their strength from this concentration, and the rum bursts with incense and dried flowers.
On the palate, this is a pretty agricultural rum, with tannins that stretch and thicken into dried fruit. Cane joins oak and vanilla, with spices (cinnamon) that still have a greasy, powdery texture. Cane's faithful ally, pepper, joins in a little later, reviving an already spicy ambience.
The finish expresses some roasted notes, with coffee, caramel and cocoa.
"This Rivière du Mât classic is a gourmet, fruity agricole with a red fruit patina that gives it its unique character..."
