Produced in very small numbers at the Macouba estate, JM Cuvée 1845 is an exceptional rum created in honor of the year Jean-Marie Martin bought the Fonds-Préville estate, located at the foot of Mount Pelée. This cuvée results from the blending of a selection of rums at least ten years old, scrupulously chosen by the cellar master. The small size of the casks used for maturation has resulted in a remarkable aromatic intensity.
Cuvée 1845 pays tribute to the age-old expertise of the JM distillery.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose of this rum is intense and tropical (that's torrid and lush, no less!). With its mellow woodiness, it's rich and heady. Ripe, exotic fruits take center stage at first, with fresh, cooked bananas, papaya and mango. The woodiness is richly spicy but doesn't sting, with coriander and cumin. This nose doesn't falter, it maintains itself and spreads its perfume relentlessly.
Licorice and mint arrive when the liquid is shaken a little. Elegant notes of stone and dried apricot add to this atmosphere of refinement. The rum becomes increasingly gourmand, with honeyed spices, bitter orange and roasted corn. There's more depth and creaminess, reminiscent of something like a square of chocolate with almond milk.
On the palate, candied orange coats the taste buds. Plum, amarena cherry and syrup are also present. The tannins are mellow, again reminiscent of cherry pit. The woodiness has been sprinkled with a 4-spice blend. The acidity of an apple recalls the fruit, which is cooked and even stewed. The pastry register has never really strayed far, and also returns to us in the form of marzipan.
The finish is very long, pastry-like, with a hint of almond liqueur (Amaretto). Reminiscent of certain Guadeloupe rums (Reimonenq, Longueteau).
"A generous, complex rum with powerful aromas. I was surprised to find the greediness of other great names from the neighbouring island..."
