Kuna Panama 8 years 40° : Description and customer reviews

Kuna is a rum produced by Varela Hermanos, a Panamanian distillery in operation since 1908.

After an initial ageing in ex-bourbon casks, the rum is shipped to France where it is finished for a further 6 months in casks from Château Pape Clément (Grand Cru Classé de Graves).

Nico's tasting note

The nose is singularly caramelised and vanilla. It carries strong notes of fermented tobacco leaves, as well as a sensation of wet cardboard. The caramel is also generously buttery, which gives the nuts a mellow character.

Aeration considerably disperses the heavy caramel and tobacco notes, and reveals a rather fruity and concentrated core, very different from what we had glimpsed at first. A harvest of exotic fruits has been waiting in the basket for a while, and is beginning to give off increasingly full-bodied aromas.

On the palate, after a round and caramelised attack, it is the slightly funky and fruity side of this rum that comes through. It finds its way between the roasted nuts and the cask dust that run across the palate, and takes its time to finally leave its impression.

The finish is slightly spicy and roasted, rather sweet, with a hint of mature exotic fruits.

"A surprising profile, the result of the marriage of a classic register of well roasted wood and a more funky, fruity and tropical part..."
