Maja 12 ans is a Salavador rum aged in American bourbon oak barrels.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose of this rum is typical of the Latino style: caramel, nuts, blond tobacco, toffee, vanilla... But it's also quite fine, as all these elements come together subtly and in a balance that avoids the pitfall of rum that's too syrupy. The toasty, finely smoky, powdery woodiness is the source of this balance. So this is a simple, clean rum that doesn't say one word too many, but is definitely well made. It also has just the right amount of sweetness, with a hint of maple syrup spiked with coffee and slightly licorice molasses.
The rest brings the impression of a mellower rum that makes us slip into a cozy butterscotch. But a quick turn of the glass revives curiosity: a hint of old leather introduces a more precise, sharper character. Elegant, finely toasted oak is always present at the right moment. The nose is now very pleasant, balanced, still gourmand with a touch of brioche and maple syrup. After these moments of delight, we quickly return to something lighter.
The palate is woody, not too round, thanks to a little bitterness or minerality from the toasted wood. We then witness a dance of caramelized nuts (pecans) that jump about as if in a frying pan, ending with the release of melting vanilla.
The maple syrup will have been present throughout this tasting: it will have cooked through to the finish and been reduced to a dark caramel.
"It's its lovely toasty woodiness that characterizes this rum. It alternately gives it a kick when it needs it, staying power and balance..."
