Malecon 18 ans Reserva Imperial is a rum from Panama, made in the Cuban tradition.
18 years in ex-bourbon American oak barrels give it roundness and gourmandise.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with dark, elegant dried fruit. The velvety-skinned prune is soaked in eau-de-vie, its sweet stone aromas maintaining a certain class. The rum then becomes more full-bodied, developing notes of slightly coppery fruit paste.
Aeration brings out serious aromas of coffee and pepper, but also an enveloping roundness, like a heavy velvet curtain. It also reveals more clearly the rum's concentrated heart, the full-bodied eau-de-vie it harbors within, made of leather and ripe fruit.
On the palate, it's smooth but well-balanced. The rum's famous concentrated heart is more apparent than ever, with aromas of leather, smoke and past exotic fruits. We'd even go as far as smoked meat, if coconut and vanilla didn't take us by the hand and lead us to more familiar lands.
The finish is reminiscent of a concentrated rum, with hints of stone and a touch of iodine.
"A rather interesting rum in the way it masters and confers full-bodied aromas..."
