Malteco 10 ans is a honey cane rum from Panama. Distilled in columns, it is a light rum that benefits from complex ageing using the Solera method. This practice, inherited from the Xerez wines, involves blending old and young rums throughout the ageing process. In this way, the older rums "educate" the younger ones.
This Rum won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rhum Fest in Paris.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with a balanced rum that floats lightly between vanilla and roast. The oak barrel has been well toasted, delivering dark notes ranging from charcoal to scorched spices. In the heart of the wood, the rum is lighter, even sweetly acidic.
With a little air, the cloud dissipates, giving way to a slowly flowing river of vanilla and sweet spices. The oak is now soft and brioche-like.
The palate is round and gently spicy, with vanilla that settles gently on the tongue. A few more full-bodied spices wake it up, with the help of well roasted wood. A little caramel forms on the palate, with a hint of maple syrup.
The finish is greedy and caramelized, lingering with a certain sweetness.
"A well-balanced rum in every respect: roundness, roastiness and spice..."
