Produced at an altitude of 1,500 m, and benefiting from the springtime conditions of the fertile Aburra Valley, traditional Medellin 8 year old rum is characterized by great smoothness. This cuvée, distilled from a selection of cane honey, then matures in American oak barrels.
Medellin 8 ans is best enjoyed as an aperitif, dry or on the rocks.
Nico's tasting notes
In brief: caramelized woody - vanilla - sweet coffee - fatty nuts - sweet - little smoky
On the nose, the rum seems to lead us into familiar territory, but soon reserves a few surprises. It pulls in all directions, tackling wet wood and fresh leather, lightness and depth in equal measure. Balance here gives way to generosity, as overripe melon mingles with vanilla and sweet coffee.
Aeration makes things a little easier and seems to bring a little more coherence. The rum is cooler, with a fresh, vegetal edge carried by a discreet solvent. The nuts are bold, with cashew nuts, peanuts and macadamia nuts coming to mind. The woodiness takes advantage of this to find balance.
The palate is very smooth, with a slight attack of toasted wood. This more imposing and characterful side gradually grows stronger, driven by notes of charcoal and tar evoking a slightly extreme caramel. The woodiness is balanced, and settles on round tannins and vanilla, with that smoky hint still in the background.
The finish is long for a rum of this strength, marked above all by caramel.
"A rum that takes its time to find its feet and develop a sweet, caramelized, woody profile..."
