Mount Gay Black Barrel is a traditional rum from the island of Barbados created by master blender Allan Smith and produced in a limited edition.
It is a mixture of rums distilled in iron stills (used for Scotch whiskies and cognacs, for example) and old rums distilled in a column still (classically used for rum). All are matured in American oak barrels that have previously contained bourbon and have been deeply burnt to allow the wood to reveal its aromas.
The whole process results in a well-balanced and highly aromatic rum.
Nico's tasting note
The nose is initially marked by notes of leather, warm toasted bread and toasted wood. Molasses and coffee take over, but gently, wrapped in vanilla.
This simple and pleasant profile is completed by stewed fruit, notably banana.
The palate is easy, first slightly gripped by spices, then by a vanilla woodiness. The sensation is light and a little thick on the palate.
The finish is briefly reminiscent of a gingerbread with honey.
