Mount Gay Black Barrel is a traditional rum from the island of Barbados, created by master blender Allan Smith and produced in a limited edition.
It's a blend of rums distilled in pot stills (used for Scotch whiskies and cognacs, for example) and aged rums distilled in column stills (traditionally used for rum). All are matured in American oak barrels that have previously contained bourbon and have been deeply burned to allow the wood to reveal its aromas.
The whole process delivers a well-balanced, highly aromatic rum.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is initially marked by notes of leather, warm toasted bread and toasty wood. Molasses and coffee take over, but gently, enveloped in vanilla.
This simple, pleasant profile is rounded out by stewed fruit, notably banana.
The palate is easy, first lightly gripped by spices, then by a vanilla woodiness. The sensation is light and a little thick on the palate.
The finish is briefly reminiscent of honeyed gingerbread.
