Real McCoy 5 ans is a traditional rum from the Foursquare distillery in Barbados. It is aged in American oak barrels that previously contained bourbon.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose of this rum is very soft and pleasant, with vanilla and coconut flesh. The oak and nuts are just right, for a balanced, delicate rum. A certain simplicity is appreciated, with milk caramel and a hint of fruitiness adding just the right amount of dynamism. This typical Barbados rum is simply pleasant, and that's good enough!
Aeration will give it more power. The aromatic bouquet is intact, but the emphasis shifts to the coconut, which now seems toasted, allowing it to assert itself more fully. There's also a toasty woodiness from which vanilla scents emerge. The fruit also seems more cooked, with the banana flesh releasing its aromas more readily.
The attack on the palate is very smooth and silky, always simple and pleasant. The balance between coconut, vanilla and woodiness is maintained, and the rum caresses the taste buds without being too discreet. The nuts are mellow, lightly toasted and caramelized, with a hint of salt.
On the finish, this rum's precision allows it to offer a delicate sensation while remaining quite persistent on the palate, thanks to the nuts supported by a toasty, caramelized woodiness.
"The fine workmanship involved in blending this rum allows it to reveal its strengths with a very pleasing sense of timing..."
