Rum & Cane British West Indies XO is a blend of rums from Trinidad & Tobago(Trinidad Distillers), and rums from Barbados ( Foursquare distillery). All these rums have been aged in bourbon barrels for at least 6 years.
Nico's tasting notes
In brief: banana - creamy - buttery - cake dough - balanced in the mouth - molasses - spices - resinous wood - gourmand
On the nose, it's an indulgent, dried banana that is the first to catch our eye. This decidedly charming rum then begins a very creamy flow, with real aromas of butter and even egg. In short, a finger-licking cake batter. The cardamom melts into the fresh cream, which is turned with a wooden spatula.
Aeration turns the page on regressive indulgence, but keeps the banana. The banana is no longer dried but fresh, albeit excessively ripe. Vanilla coats the almond and coconut, and the nuts are caramelized with butter. The sweetness is still there, but in a (slightly) more sophisticated way, with yeast, tobacco and tea.
On the palate, we avoid overindulgence. The rum is much more balanced than expected, with a real taste of molasses brandy, cane sugar or even sugarcane juice. The woodiness is peppery and spicy, deliciously liquorice and medicinal, with hints of camphor and resin. The texture is soft, but the rum expresses itself, all in measure, with a greediness that is now much more serious and gripping.
The finish is quite long, pastry-like, with candied fruits, spices and molasses.
"What a treat for this blend, which certainly owes a lot to the Pot-Still from the Foursquare distillery..."
