SBS Venezuela 2006 is a molasses rum from a distillery in Venezuela. With its tropical climate and high rainfall, this South American country enjoys ideal conditions for growing sugar cane, making it an important player in the world of rum.
The rum was distilled in 2006 in a column still. During its 16 years of ageing, the rum underwent a double maturation process in tropical and continental climates: first in an ex-bourbon barrel, before being transferred to an ex-porto barrel.
Bottling was carried out in May 2022 by Danish brand 1423 Word Class Spirits, without cold filtration. This unique cask delivered a total of 341 bottles worldwide.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose offers a lovely concentration of caramelized nuts, taking us to pecan and maple syrup. The toasted wood has a light molasses patina, while the fiber is full of dark prunes.
With aeration, the caramel and roastiness coat a woodiness that still feels a little raw, fresh and tannic, creating a lovely balance and a really pleasant dynamic. The nuts seem as crunchy as pralines, and their core carries a few notes of toasted coconut.
The palate is lively, with fresh fruity notes (peach, pear, plum) that we hadn't necessarily noticed on the nose. The texture is also finer and lighter than expected, indicating a lively, dynamic rum. The sweet spices and caramelized nuts come through naturally, once the first phase has passed.
The finish is resolutely roasted, with coffee and toasted wood, and slightly tannic. It continues with an almost sticky maple syrup and some sparkling spices.
"A relatively light rum to start with, which has benefited from its double maturation to offer us a fine concentration..."
