Shack Super Spiced is first and foremost a blend of rums from Barbados, Guatemala, Trinidad and Haiti. What they have in common is that they have aged a minimum of 5 years in American oak casks, and are traditional rums (i.e. made from molasses).
The whole has been enriched with spices such as star anise, cinnamon, ginger, lemon and orange peel, nutmeg and Madagascar vanilla.
This spiced was awarded a gold medal in the spiced rum category at the 2016 Paris Rum Fest.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is very spicy, in the sense that it's very expressive, but relatively mild. Yet initially, it develops so much orange and cherry that you'd call it a fruity rum rather than a spicy one. The cherry is of a very peppery kind, like those chewing gums or American sodas. Cardamom and nutmeg are the first spices to really stand out, with a pleasant freshness. The fruity side comes back with a banana candy.
Aeration lends a more natural edge to the spices, evoking exotic wood bark. The nose also evokes candied fruit, or rather candied lemon and orange peel. Ginger seems to be the dominant spice, reminiscent of those little granules used to prepare an infusion.
On the palate, orange zest leads the way, but the spices soon return to their level with pepper and cinnamon. The rum quickly becomes spicy in the first sense of the word, pungent and peppery, this power paving the way for the freshness of the ginger. Curiously, the palate sensation is sweet and salty, with the impression of salt crystals melting on the tongue, prolonging the flavors.
The finish is very sweet once the fire has dissipated, impregnating the mouth with citrus aromas, especially lemon.
"We mustn't forget that a "Spiced Rum" doesn't systematically focus on spices, this Shack Rum reminds us of that with its leaked and candied flavors..."
