Launched in 2008 by St. Lucia Distillers Group, TØZ rums are named after the Troy Ounce method of measuring gold and precious stones.
TØZ Gold is a cuvée made from molasses, some of which is distilled continuously, the rest in iron stills, before being aged for five years in American oak casks. These casks were once used for Jack Daniel's, Jim Bean and Buffalo Trace, all renowned brands of bourbon.
A six-month maturation in port casks completes the aromatic richness of TØZ Gold.
TØZ Gold won several gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and World Spirits Awards in 2011, as well as at the World Spirits Awards in 2010.
Nico's tasting notes
The first notes on the nose are herbaceous, resinous and medicinal. We're almost in the register of herbal liqueurs like Chartreuse. This nose is rather unusual, out of the clichés. There's an oxidative, straw-wine quality, with lots of nuts. White pepper tickles slightly. A metallic edge reinforces the impression of precision and sharpness. After a while, we sense a softer turn: the nuts gradually become tinged with caramel.
Aeration confirms this tendency: the rum is less clear-cut, rounder. It's now tangy, more like a cinnamon-scented candy. The resinous side is still there, but mixed with beeswax. The straw wine's nuts are also more mellow and coated.
The attack on the palate is soft, surprisingly discreet given what the nose promised. The molasses is dark and licorice-like. On the finish, this licorice recreates the herbaceous ambience that dominated the nose.
"A rum with a singular nose that offers new horizons and illustrates once again the great variety of rum aromas..."
Fabrice Gilles
Very soft, excellent
