Villa Rica Single Barrel 23 ans is the famous Mexican rum that has been named the best rum in the world by GQ magazine. It is a molasses rum distilled in columns and aged in American oak barrels. The distillery is located in Cordoba, in the Veracruz region. Situated at an altitude of 800m, it is known for its coffee plantations and temperate climate.
In 2020, Villa Rica 23 ans was voted best rum of the year by the International Taste Institute. The jury was made up of 200 internationally renowned chefs and sommeliers, who, of course, tasted blind.
He has also been awarded the Superior Taste Award several times by the International Taste & Quality Institute in Belgium.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, roast and sweetness dominate, with toast, coffee, licorice and honey-coated pecans. The darker, burnt sides of the oak are more than offset by a very round, sweet sensation.
Aeration allows us to get to the heart of the rum. Hints of cane sugar, syrup, and a touch of more concentrated rum add a touch of saltiness to the recipe.
On the palate, nuts such as pecan seem roasted to the extreme, but at the same time sufficiently coated so that their char doesn't disturb the taste buds in any way. Roasting is naturally the key word, and the whole family of dark, toasty aromas is reviewed. Molasses is at home here, with its accents of baked sugar and licorice.
The finish is round, slightly peppery and caramelized.
"A rum typical of a certain tradition, well roasted and sweetened..."

I had read an article on this rum and the tasting of this sample allowed me to appreciate it, too bad that for the moment we can't order it, I'm waiting for the stock shortage to be over.
