Dzama Vieux rhum 8 ans cognac finish 40° : Description and customer reviews

Dzama Vieux rhum 8 ans cognac finish is a sugar rum(molasses rum) from Madagascar. While Dzama rums are traditionally aged in whisky casks, this one has benefited from a special refining process. First, the rum was transferred to small casks to further enhance its complexity. Then it was transferred to old Cognac barrels for the final months of aging.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, the rum is very sweet and thick, and the palate is greasy and sticky. The sugar syrup is slightly fruity, just like a grenadine syrup. Vanilla caramel is also present, like a gourmet topping.

Aeration erases the fruit and gives way to vanilla caramel. Coconut milk and sweetened condensed milk add to the thick, liqueur-like texture, and a smooth, creamy mouthfeel is expected.

On the palate, the attack isn't as round as one might expect, but the aromas are smooth and creamy. The vanilla caramel gains a little character with a pinch of nuts, then a great flight of spices surprises the taste buds, giving them a good warm-up.

The finish is vanilla, followed by our grenadine syrup in the final moments.

"Plenty of roundness for this dessert rum, but a surprisingly spicy mid-palate..."

Offered as a gift, the recipient couldn't resist tasting it straight away. A very good (if rather expensive) bottle!

PS: I ordered and received a 70cl bottle, not a sample.
