Ferroni Brut de Fût Océan indien is a traditional molasses rum from the Rivière du Mât distillery. Established in 1886, it is one of the oldest distilleries on Reunion Island.
This rum was distilled in columns, then aged for a total of 6 years, first in ex-bourbon oak barrels, then 4 years in French oak barrels.
This vintage was bottled barrel strength at 58.6°.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose settles on a slab of shiny nougatine, rich with blanched nuts, like an oily almond nourishing a crunchy caramel. Between these softer marbling marks, we can make out a vegetal milk, sometimes carrying with it a slightly oily hint.
With aeration, you might detect a few vegetal, velvety touches of cane-juice eau-de-vie, overlaid by a soft, white woodiness and subtle vanilla notes.
The palate opens with an overflowing woodiness of nuts, whose aromatic intensity follows that of the liquid's alcoholic heat. This pleasing build-up doesn't go over the top, and then gives way to a new, more pastry-like aromatic facet, inhabited in particular by pits with slightly coppery edges.
The finish shows us another aspect of the woodiness, older and more toasty, with a powdery, bitter edge that takes us to the side of walnut stain and coffee.
"An original, varied woodiness that explores oak from every angle..."
