Flor De Caña 14 ans is a molasses rum, distilled and aged by one of the greatest exponents of the Latin American style. This Nicaraguan family-run business has now been in operation for 5 generations. It is increasingly aware of its social and environmental impact, and was rewarded for its efforts with Fair Trade certification in 2017. What's more, it now operates solely on renewable energy.
This rum is distilled in a multi-column complex that produces rather light distillates. It is aged for 14 years, 100% tropical, in old bourbon casks, which gives it all the complexity and depth of a very old rum.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, the rum is both dry and caramelized, with an immediate roasted character. The roasted nuts have taken on an air of charcoal and coffee grounds, but gain in warmth and spice with time.
Aeration gives way to more spice. The palette becomes more diversified, more colorful, more blended, leading to a rather elegant and intense bouquet. The harder, burnt aspects of the roasting have disappeared in this rum, which is now more mellow and supple.
The palate offers a well-balanced attack, which nevertheless leans towards roundness. Slightly piquant spices introduce a roasted mid-palate of nuts, coffee, toasted wood and molasses.
The finish opens with a more gourmand touch, with more caramelized, sticky nuts.
"A rum faithful to the Flor de Caña tradition, with a little extra smoothness and roundness..."

BLAISE
Very good, but I prefer the 12-year-old.
