Hechicera is a molasses rum from Colombia's Caribbean coast. It is distilled in a continuous column at the Casa Santana distillery in Barranquilla. It was then aged by maestro ronero Giraldo Mituoka Kangana (of Japanese origin), using the solera system. This involves a complex blend of rums aged from 12 to 21 years. The older rums "educate" the younger ones throughout the maturation process. This rum, made exclusively from bourbon barrels, is bottled without any additives or colorants.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose, light and vanilla-flavored at first, offers a rather delicate profile. A few hints of strawberry milk or grenadine take flight, to reveal a more woody, caramelized side. Roasted nuts are revealed, along with sweet, mild spices.
Aeration takes us to a more classically bourbon-barrel rum, with luscious, toasty oak, vanilla and toasted coconut.
On the palate, it's the same story, with a tender, savory woodiness, enhanced by coconut milk, but not sweet. There's a certain roundness, but no real oily or syrupy sensation. The vanilla is rich and dark, and its aromas join the caramelized notes of roasted nuts and toasted oak.
The finish is fairly light, leaving a slightly drier note of blond tobacco.
"A pleasant, unadorned rum that will do its job in all conditions..."
