Le Gus't Engenhos do Norte 6 ans 41,4°: Description and customer reviews

Gus't Engenhos do Norte 6 ans is an IGP agricultural rum produced on the island of Madeira in Portugal. This selection was made by French wine merchant Le Gus't, a family-run business based in Manosque that has been offering its own bottlings since 2015.

This 6-year-old rum was produced by Europe's oldest distillery. Founded in 1927 in Porto da Cruz, the distillery still operates steam-powered machinery in a period atmosphere. The rum is aged and bottled on site.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose plunges us straight into a package of gourmet tobacco, divided between vanilla notes and vegetal character. The concentrated cane offers resinous reflections, with a candied base that mingles with the fatness of the wood.

With aeration, this time we throw ourselves onto a display of dried fruits, where mango takes pride of place. Its exotic past is enhanced by a hint of passion fruit, then caressed by blond tobacco, sweet spices and black tea.

On the palate, everything takes shape in a candied, gourmand cane juice, full of mango, peach, melon and grapes, with a very slight, perfectly regulated bitterness of tannins and pits. Mellow tobacco joins wood and sweet spices, which in turn create a fat, slightly powdery texture.

The finish continues on ripe cane, bursting with fresh, dried fruit.

"A very fine selection from the Gus't team, who went in search of a profile with Marie-Galantais highlights..."
