Drawing its inspiration from the famous whiskies of Islay, Longrow Peated is a clearly peaty variation from the Springbank distillery, and is presented here with no mention of age.
Distilled twice, it gives us the opportunity to see Campbeltown in a different light.
Our tasting note from Thomas
The nose immediately conjures up ample peat. The latter is creamy and farmy, tending towards hazelnut (symptomatic of Longrow peat) while offering a light veil of smoky vegetation. Salt-covered lemons also make an appearance.
The opening brings out the deeply cereal nature of this Longrow. Indeed, smoky barley and a mineral wave (wet stone) form a most pleasant swell. Without dispersing, this characterful nose offers us a condensed version of Campbeltown.
The palate has good amplitude and synthesizes quite well what was perceived on the nose. Smoky cereals and lemon juice contrast with the peat. The latter is still fatty, farmy and enriched with hazelnuts. Later, mineral flavors add to the mix. Likewise, the salinity gradually increases, as does the ambient sweetness: preserved lemons and almonds take center stage.
The finish is not excessive, but retains the ardor of the palate. Cereals, caramelized almonds and lemon sit simply alongside peat that's as typical as ever (hazelnut smoke, farmhouse cream, saltiness).
"A peated whisky that's off the beaten track thanks to its simple yet assertive character ..."
