O Reizinho 6 ans is the oldest rum ever bottled by Madeira's small distillery. This family-run, artisanal unit distills rums from pure cane juice, in a copper still. This traditional Portuguese method produces highly aromatic, gourmet agricultural rums that are 100% cane juice.
Aged for 6 years in barrels containing Madeira wine. This strong, unique signature reflects a terroir that is just as unique. The brut de fût bottling further highlights this expressive, generous identity.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose reveals a deep, dense rum; the concentration of the years spent in the barrel is definitely palpable. The cane is more than candied, it aggregates the melted tannins of the wood, transforming them into spices, cocoa and toasted cereals. We can then imagine a reduced, cooked cane juice, like caramel or raw sugar.
Aeration opens up this rum, which has not seen the light or the open air for 6 long years. All the cane, cocoa, cereal and spice jam unfolds, with a striking gourmet intensity. The wood is completely melted and candied, giving the impression of caramel milk jam.
The palate is lively and woody, with oak still very much alive. Spices and cocoa initially hide behind a veil of roasting, before emerging in a breath of finely sulphured reflections. Concentrated and reduced to the max, the cane is coiled in the hollow of the wood, radiating intensely, eventually breaking through the bark to let its roundly vegetal flavors burst forth.
The finish is like a Madeira "bolo de mel", a moist cake with cane honey and spices.
