Chamarel XO Cognac Cask Finish 45° : Description and customer reviews

This "extra old " pure cane juice rum from the Chamarel distillery in Mauritius was aged for just over 6 years in French oak barrels, before an 18-month finish in barrels that had previously contained cognac.

The rum has been aged for a total of 8 years.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is immediately marked by an unmistakable copper imprint. This note, typical of Chamarel still rums, is all the more present here, as it is supported by a few sulphurous notes. It unfolds on well roasted nuts, lightly coated with honey.

Aeration opens the rum to more fruit. It even welcomes them with open arms, and ripe bananas are just as welcome as black grapes and apricots. As time goes by, the powdery, coppery side transforms, becoming more and more gourmand, sometimes reminiscent of chocolate or highly baked nougatine.

The palate is soft, round and perfectly disarming. Once again, Chamarel patiently builds up a very complex nose, the better to melt us in the mouth. Because that's what it's all about: a mellow rum with velvety vegetal notes, taste buds sweetly enveloped in thick, gently spicy cane juice, complex, intertwined flavors, spices completely melted onto a woodiness that's just as woody.

The finish is soft, almost sweet. A slight bitterness of lime zest remains, along with complex floral and fruity notes, like a perfume.

"Chamarel certainly offers some of the most complex, chiselled and at the same time gourmet rums you're likely to come across...".

Fantastic rum, very hard to find (except in Mauritius).
