Offrian Rum Panama 12 ans 40° : Description and customer reviews

Offrian 12 ans is a rum made in Panama, at the Las Cabras distillery, according to the instructions of Don Pancho, the world-famous maestro ronero.

The rum was distilled in a copper column. It was then aged for 12 years in ex-bourbon American white oak barrels.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, the oak is initially quite dry, but soon becomes coated with salted butter caramel. The wood is roasted and even burnt, which brings out quite a bit of vanilla. The balance gently settles in, moving towards cane and muscovado.

Aeration confirms the pleasant balance between the fullness of the cane, the character of the toasted barrel and the roundness of the vanilla. The rum doesn't falter, continuing to reveal fresh, mellow, sweet cane.

The palate is initially sweet, but not too liquorish. Vanilla and white wood caramelize for a delicious balance. The surprise comes in the mid-palate, with a spicy heat that rises and soon invades the entire palate. One might even say spicy, so surprising and astonishing is this heat.

The finish unfolds on a suave cane and honeyed flavors.

"A delicious but well-balanced rum, with a real surprise on the palate..."

In comparison, Offrian 8 ans is simpler and sweeter. The notes of maturity brought by the wood are less present, and the rum is a little more "naked". It does, however, gain in freshness, and is arguably more suited to cocktails.
